WWII JAPAN MILITARY RATTRAPANTE EST 650.00 - ACTUAL 355.00

Solution

JAPANESE MILITARY RATTRAPANTE

I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN BEFORE PICS
THIS TIMER STARTED LIFE AS A

GERMAN-SWISS MADE

M.T. STAUFFER

"NEW JOCKEY CLUB"

RATTRAPANTE BUILT FOR HORSE RACE TRACKS

BECAME BEST SPLIT SECOND
CHRONOGRAPH FOR MILITARY USE

ESTIMATE WAS 650.00
FINAL FEE WAS 355.00

THE RESTORATION

IMG_7693.JPG (132041 bytes)

32 HOURS OF ROCK'S TIME WAS SPENT BETWEEN
OVERHAULING THUS
STAUFFER COMPLICATED MOVEMENT
AND

RESTORING HER CASE, DIAL AND ILLUMINATION

A ROCK QUOTE
"I ALWAYS ATTEMPT TO KEEP AN ANTIQUE TIME PIECE LIKE
THIS ONE AS CLOSE TO LOOKING USED AS POSSIBLE"

ROCK

A ROCK INFO

"THIS STAUFFER OPERATES LIKE IT SHOULD. SOME
PARTS THAT WERE UNAVAILABLE WERE MADE OR CONVERTED.

OCCASIONALLY SHE MAY REQUIRE AN EXTRA PUSH OR CLICK HERE OR THERE.
BUT THEN AGAIN, IT CAN OCCUR ON A NEW ONE. "

IMG_7694.JPG (120793 bytes)

NOTE THE JAPANESE MILITARY ENGRAVED HINGED CASE BACK
******************************************************

 STAUFFER-6.jpg (135286 bytes)
********************************************************

IMG_7649.JPG (195241 bytes)

AGAIN, A FAR CRY FROM WHAT IT WAS AFTER 83+ YEARS

IMG_7641.JPG (143008 bytes)

THE CROWN WINDS THE MAIN
THEN ONE DOWN CLICK OF THE CROWN
CAUSES TWO MAIN HANDS TO ROTATE AND BEGIN COUNTING TIME
THE SMALL SUBSIDIARY DIAL AT CENTER TOP COUNTS ROTATIONS
ANOTHER DOWN CLICK OF CROWN STOPS BOTH MAIN HANDS
ANOTHER DOWN CLICK OF CROWN RETURNS BOTH MAIN HANDS TO CENTER TOP

STAUFFER-8.jpg (154328 bytes)

IMG_7648.JPG (121760 bytes)

WHEN PRESSED THE RECTANGULAR BUTTON LEFT OF CROWN
OPERATES THE SECOND MAIN HAND BEHIND THE FIRST TOP MAIN HAND.
ONE CLICK STOPS THIS HAND, TO MANUALLY RECORD TIME
ANOTHER CLICK MAKES THE HAND CATCH UP TO THE TOP MAIN HAND
WHERE IT RESUMES COUNTING WITH MAIN HAND
YOU CAN STOP AND START THE SECOND HAND AS MANY TIMES
AS THERE IS IN EACH ROTATION

IMG_7644.JPG (138108 bytes)

HERE THE SECOND HAND STOPPED PAST 30
WHILE MAIN HAND CONTINUES
WHERE THE TOP SUBSIDIARY DIAL HAND RECORDS THE TOP HAND ROTATIONS

IMG_7645.JPG (136661 bytes)

HERE ROCK CLICKED THE RECTANGULAR BUTTON LEFT OF CROWN
TO MAKE THE SECOND MAI HAND RESUME WITH THE MAIN HAND

IMG_7647.JPG (140079 bytes)

HERE ANOTHER CLICK WILL STOP IT

STAUFFER-9.jpg (142944 bytes)

YOU NOTED THE BROWN CIRCULAR DOTS?
THERE WERE MORE, BUT NO PIC OF IT
THEY ARE RADIUM DOTS
PLACED FOR MILITARY USE
THE OTHERS WERE WORN OFF
SOME WERE JUST CIRCLES WITH NOTHING
ROCK WILL RECREATE THESE THE WAY IT WAS
IN 1930'-1940'

IMG_7658.JPG (147230 bytes)

THE ILLUMINATION USED BY ROCK IS AF SUPER LUMINOVA
A NON TOXIC PHOSPHORUS PIGMENT COMBINED WITH LACQUER
THE PROBLEM WITH COLOR IS THE PIGMENT COMES IN
WHITE
GREEN
BLUE
RED
ORANGE

WE NEED A TAN TO BROWN COLOR AND INVESTING IN DIFFERENT COLOR PIGMENT
WOULD COST A TIDY SUM AND MIXING COLORS SIMPLY DOES NOT
PRODUCED THE RESULTS WE REQUIRE

IMG_7659.JPG (139212 bytes)

ABOVE ROCK MIXED LACQUER AND WHITE LUME
HE WILL ADD A PAINT MIX HE DOES NOT OFFER THE RECIPE TO
LACQUER WILL NOT MIX WITH PAINT. WATER OR OIL WOULD
SEPARATE

IMG_7657.JPG (187608 bytes)

HERE IS MODEL PAINT. ROCK WILL BURN THIS FOR A MIXTURE

IMG_7661.JPG (122963 bytes)

HERE WHITE LUME LACQUER AND THE TAN POWDER IS MIXED

IMG_7662.JPG (166119 bytes)

WALLA
ROCK APPLIES THE LUME
AND MAKES IT LOOK LIKE IT WAS 80 YEARS AGO
YET WITH AN AGED LOOK THAT WILL

INCREASE OVER TWO YEARS INTO
WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE AFTER 80 YEARS

IMG_7663.JPG (141084 bytes)

HERE WE TEST AGAIN TO INSURE HANDS WILL PASS EACH OTHER
AND THAT WEIGHT IS NOT A CONCERN ON FLY BACK

IMG_7664.JPG (156553 bytes)

TOTALLY AWESOME

NOTE HANDS ALIGN PERFECTLY EVERY TIME

STAUFFER-10.jpg (84735 bytes)

BRING IN THE LIGHT

IMG_7669.JPG (119111 bytes)

OK... 12 MOVEMENT PARTS EITHER HAND MADE OF SCAVENGED
YET A CRYSTAL SHOULD BE AVAILABLE? FORGETABOUTID
YOU HAVE TO USE A PERIOD CRYSTAL!
CELLULOID WAS THE CRYSTAL OF THE DAY
THEY GET YELLOW OVER TIME
BUT ROCK HAS ANOTHER SECRET RECIPE TO RESTORING CELLULOID
YES, SOME BUFF IT RAW TO REMOVE THE DEEP YELLOW
THAT OCCURS AT THE TOP LAYERS
INTERACTION OF TIME PLUS UV RADIATION

IMG_7670.JPG (167946 bytes)

HERE IS A MIXTURE THAT TURNS THE CRYSTAL INTO A RUBBERY CRYSTAL
CARE MUST BE TAKEN TO FIT IT BEFORE IT DRIES
AT THE CONCLUSION THE CRYSTAL HAS SOME YELLOW WHICH WE WANT
BUT IS AS STRONG AND PLIABLE AS IT WAS 80  YEARS AGO

IMG_7671.JPG (145291 bytes)

BAM! FITS PERFECT
FINISH S EXCELLENT
LOOKS 100 YEARS OLD
PERFORMS BETTER THAN MODERN ACRYLIC

IMG_7681.JPG (132792 bytes)

NOTE. UPON CLOSE EXAMINATION
HANDS HAVE RUST
DIAL LOOKS AGED LIKE IT SHOULD THROUGH CRYSTAL
ILLUMINATION DOTS HAVE BEEN PRESSED TO OFFER AN AGED LOOK
CASE HAS BEEN RESTORED, YET EDGES CORNERS WERE LEFT AS WAS
OFFERING THE LOOK OF AN OFFICERS
600.00 [ IN 1930/1940 DOLLARS ]
JAPANESE MILITARY RATTRAPANTE
THAT WAS WELL CARED FOR YET USED IN THE SERVICE OF THE MILITARY

IMG_7674.JPG (155721 bytes)

READY FOR ACTION
AGAIN

IMG_7689.JPG (113899 bytes)

WOW
....IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT
THE CASE FINISH WAS A MESS
TO RESTORE WITHOUT CAUSING A LOSS OF LAYERS
ESPECIALLY THE
ANCHOR KANJI AND ARABIC NUMERALS
WAS A DELICATE JOB

IMG_7679.JPG (143928 bytes)

AGAIN, WIDE AREA OF INNER HINGED
MOISTURE/DUST COVER HAS HIGH POLISH
BUT
NOTE THE EDGES OF MAIN CASE
NOTE THE BOW INNER SIDES
NOTE THE EDGES OF THE OUTER CASE

LEAVING SOME OF THE WEAR AND TEAR IS MOST IMPORTANT

IMG_7676.JPG (145606 bytes)

!!!!!!YET THE CASE IS RESTORED!!!!!!!!

IMG_7652.JPG (142351 bytes)

INNER DUST/MOISTURE HINGED BACK
IS FACTORY SWISS FINISHED

IMG_7678.JPG (133036 bytes)

WANT ONE? BE PREPARED TO PAY A HEFTY PRICE

IMG_7677.JPG (126889 bytes)

THE AREAS LEFT WITH WEAR ARE PERFECT BECAUSE THEY WOULD BE THERE
NO MATTER HOW WELL KEPT AND PROTECTED
IF IT WAS AN ITEM THAT PARTICIPATED IN WAR FARE!
AND
THIS TIME PIECE DID SEE ACTION

IMG_7685.JPG (141158 bytes)

AGAIN
NOTE HANDS WORKING

IMG_7686.JPG (132474 bytes)

BUTTON LEFT OF CROWN SENDS THE LOWER
MAIN HAND TO PERFECT POSITION

IMG_7650.JPG (199861 bytes)

OVERHAULED

2 TWO ADJUSTMENTS
7 JEWELS
M.T. STAUFFER
SWISS

IMG_7692.JPG (144537 bytes)

ILLUMINATION IS LIKE IT WAS
I DID NOT NOTICE ID SUBSIDIARY HAND HAD ILLUMINATION

IMG_7690.JPG (131558 bytes)

LOOKING LIKE IS IS AGED

IMG_7687.JPG (126843 bytes)

RETURN TO CENTER
ADDRESS UNKNOWN
RETURN TO CENTER
WORKS ALL DAY LONG

LOL

IMG_7674.JPG (155721 bytes)
